Studying Menstrual Waste Management in Urban Spaces
This research paper was shaped by months of observation, discussion, and learning around an issue that often goes unnoticed—menstrual waste management in Bengaluru’s residential complexes. Our work began with a simple question: what happens after a sanitary product is discarded, and how aware are residents of safe and sustainable disposal practices?
To explore this, we studied everyday disposal systems, spoke with residents, and examined existing infrastructure within apartment complexes. We identified gaps not only in facilities, but also in awareness and communication around menstrual waste. Understanding these challenges required careful data collection, analysis, and collaboration as a team.
Writing this paper pushed us to look beyond the surface and consider how design, education, and community responsibility intersect. By documenting these findings, we hope the research encourages housing associations, residents, and local authorities to reflect, discuss, and work collectively toward safer and more sustainable waste systems.
